DENTAL CROWNS

Dental Crowns In Centreville VA

In a perfect world, our teeth would be indestructible and never crack or decay. However, these are all natural occurrences that most people face at some point. Some issues are preventable with proper dental care and lifestyle choices such as avoiding hard candies and good oral hygiene. When your teeth do crack or become damaged, you can call O’Donnell Family Dentistry to place dental crowns in Centreville VA.

Protect Damaged Teeth with Dental Crowns

During your dental exam, Dr. O’Donnell will look for cracks, decay, and other damage. Some teeth that are weak, damaged, or cannot be restored with a filling or bonding, may need a crown, sometimes referred to as a “cap”.

When teeth have been cracked, particularly when they are severely damaged, they leave the tissue and other sensitive material referred to as the “pulp” exposed. When left uncovered, it will be painful for you to chew food, drink liquids, and eventually bacteria will invade and cause an infection. Dental crowns are used to cover the tooth and act as a protector, while also restoring the look of your smile.

Stress Free Placement

The dental crowns we use are made from porcelain. Porcelain crowns are ideal because they are made to look and feel just like your natural teeth. Alternative materials such as gold crowns or even porcelain fused to metal, may be used, but don’t offer the same aesthetics and natural look of porcelain crowns.

Placing the crown can take 2-3 visits to our office. During the first appointment, we will need to reshape the tooth to allow adequate space for the crown to be placed over.

After we have reshaped the tooth, we will take a mold of the tooth, as well as the surrounding teeth. The mold will be sent to an experienced dental lab that will fabricate your new crown. The lab will create a custom restoration that matches the color and look of your natural teeth, which allows it to blend in with your smile.

While your permanent crown is being made, Dr. O’Donnell will place a temporary crown to protect the tooth. It usually takes two weeks for the dental lab to complete your crown. Once we have received the crown, you will come in for a final appointment to have the crown placed.
